Oral Motor Rehabilitation

Facial Weakness/Facial Droop & Oral Motor Recovery

Services are provided for individuals experiencing oral-facial weakness, reduced movement, decreased sensation, and functional changes related to neurological or medical conditions affecting the oral musculature. This may include individuals recovering from facial weakness following stroke, Bell’s palsy, neurological conditions, trauma, or facial/oral surgical procedures.

It should be noted that in cases involving Bell’s palsy, services may support individuals experiencing persistent oral-facial weakness, atrophy, reduced coordination, or residual functional deficits following appropriate medical treatment and recovery, when medically appropriate. Speech-Language Pathology services do not treat the underlying neurological or infectious cause, but rather address residual oral-motor impairments that may remain following recovery.

Therapy focuses on improving strength, coordination, range of motion, symmetry, sensory awareness, and overall functional movement of the lips, jaw, tongue, and associated oral musculature through individualized therapeutic exercises and neuromuscular re-education techniques. Treatment may additionally target jaw opening, labial strength, lingual function, facial movement, oral containment, and overall oral motor control depending on patient needs.

Care is approached collaboratively and conservatively, recognizing the importance of appropriate medical healing and interdisciplinary management prior to initiating therapeutic intervention when indicated. Treatment plans are individualized and guided by clinical expertise, functional goals, and patient-centered care to support improved comfort, oral function, confidence, and overall quality of life.
